CHAPTER NAME & LOCATION: Membershipwrecked Chapter, Joinusnow, New York
TIME OF YEAR:
September
SITE: Guest
Night -- Your rehearsal hall
SCENE I
Your 27-voice chorus is kicking off its “Divas
Wanted Campaign” tonight. Everyone has an assignment and is ready to meet
and greet prospectives as they enter the building. Fliers have been distributed
and ads have been placed in the local paper. Your PR/Marketing Committee has
done everything POSSIBLE to bring people into your rehearsal hall. SIX (6) guests
arrive and are warmly greeted by the membership…then introduced to the Director…who listens to their voice ranges
and assigns them to a voice part. (5 of these guests are good singers; 1 of them is a monotone!). Section Leaders are introduced to the new singers. The Ass’t Director
begins vocal warm-ups…but is not very prepared. She really doesn’t
know what she’s doing. After a few warm-ups, the Director takes over and teaches a tag. She does not use Section Leaders…but
presents all four parts herself. Problem?
She can’t sing
bass or tenor very well, making the learning process a bit difficult. THEN…the chorus performs a couple
of songs for the guests. The singing is not accurate, postures are poor and faces are not engaged. Most of the evening, after
this short rehearsal, is spent on coffee, cake and chatter.
SCENE II
Explain to the audience that it is now 3
weeks later…and only ONE GUEST (the
monotone) is still returning. The chorus continues to singing inaccurately and discipline on the risers is lacking. The Director
doesn’t seem to be bothered by it at all. They talk…she talks…all at the same time. During the business
meeting, the GUEST makes an announcement …stating that she just LOVES this “choir”! It’s exactly what she’s been looking for!! The
chorus applauds…and a few members ask the Membership Chair about the other guests…wanting to know why they haven’t
returned? The Membership Chair states that all of them indicated they “didn’t
have the time” right now. Members begin attacking the advertising and flier
expenditures…stating that it doesn’t PAY to advertise. People don’t
stay anyway!!
CHARACTERS THAT NEED TO BE ASSIGNED:
·
6 Eager Prospective Guests – 5 singers and 1 monotone
·
Director who teaches a tag…but doesn’t seem very professional or knowledgeable
·
Warm and friendly undisciplined, poor-singing chorus members
·
Membership Chair

Become familiar with SCENARIO #9…and, using
the same personnel, create a role play which FIXES the situation. The important
message to get across here is that advertising DOES pay … or there wouldn’t have been 6 guests on the first night; Secondly…what goes on DURING A REHEARSAL night is critical. The prospective SINGERS were there…and left, unimpressed. THAT’S why they “don’t
have time” for Sweet Adelines. The NON-SINGER thought this chorus was terrific? Why? Because she IS suited to them. Bottom line: We will attract those LIKE
us.
Think about that!?$#~!
